There’s so much to do, right? Los Santos is a huge city, but there’s the numerous miles of countryside outside of it, and of course an whole ocean floor littered with collectibles. Where do you begin? In the start, certain, but where to start that’s done? There’s no wrong answer in GTA V. Explore or less you like.
Grand Theft Auto 5 starts out with a prologue that introduces some of the narrative’s characters. Every safehouse comes with a space where you are able to store a car or two, but each of the 3 personalities also has his own garage. Franklin, Michael, and Trevor-specific map icons are marked green, blue, and orange, respectively, and this colour coding helps to identify each of the garages. The trick from here is simple, in theory at least: stay from these vision cones. That’s not always feasible given the layouts of the streets and freeways around Los Santos, but it is what you have to do. There’s no onscreen indicator that conveys just how much time you’ve left before the police call off their search. Your wanted level simply flashes to let you know that they’re hunting, and disappears entirely when they call it stops.
There’s no real trick to getting off, you only need to be sensible. In the city proper, make use of alleyways and the vacant spaces beneath elevated roadways. The aqueduct might seem like a fantastic spot to hide out, but be aware that the fuzz will look in there too. You might also look to some body of water that’s deep enough for you to dive under the surface . You can’t hold your breath forever, but swimming underwater is fantastic cover for getting off.
Away from the city, you will mostly just wish to prevent all streets. Generally speaking there’s an element of improvisation to vibration heat. Ammu-Nation is still the weapons provider of choice in the GTA universe, and they are everywhere in Los Santos. Guns, gun mods, and ammo all cost money, with just one noteworthy exclusion: Trevor is such a huge deal up north of his Sandy Shores home that the regional Ammu-Nation there gives him all his firearms for free. He has to pay for ammo, mods (prioritize suppressors and protracted mags), and armor, but there’s no cost whatsoever for the remainder of it. Ensure you stock up once you’ve obtained control of Trevor.
Also worth noting: you’re not confronted with a one-or-the-other scenario if you pick up numerous weapons of the same type (ie pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, etc.). Holding LB on an Xbox 360 controller brings up the radial weapon wheel. There are still other ways to earn money outside that. If your minimap suddenly strobes white, watch for blue or red dots there; this can be a sign that one of the energetic”citizen needing” moments is happening. Occasionally it is a pickpocket, sometimes it is a gang shootout, and sometimes it’s only a random drunk couple searching for a ride. You can earn some extra scratch by helping out these people… or not. Why return the $2,000 you’ve only regained, to the woman over there when she’s going to take it back and give you a $200 reward? Why drive lone hitchhiker into his wedding when you can just as easily sell off him to some cannibalistic mountain cult that pays handsomely for new meat (true story)?
Strangers and Freaks
There’s more of a clear split between essential route missions and optional missions in Grand Theft Auto 5 than there ever has been before in the series. All optional missions fall under the heading of”Strangers and Freaks,” and all of them appear originally on your minimap as question marks that are color-coded to each character. The Strangers and Freaks missions generally follow their particular plot thread; once you’ve fulfilled a particular personality for the very first time, all subsequent assignment markers in their storyline are identified on your minimap as an icon consisting of a question mark and the first letter of the mission-giver’s title.
You can easily check on the number of”open” missions your three personalities have by pressing and holding the down button on the D-pad. When the character switch interface looks, you will usually observe a number over each personality portrait. Visiting an Ammu-Nation firing range, on the other hand, offers an opportunity to enhance your own shooting. There’s generally a nominal fee for a whole lot of the stuff, but it is minor ($15 for a round in the shooting selection, for instance ).
Special abilities can also be unique to each personality, although they’re all activated (and deactivated) in precisely the exact same manner: push back on the left and right thumbsticks in precisely the exact same moment. Franklin’s special allows him to slow time down while he’s driving. Vehicles also accelerate faster and lose less momentum after collisions while the special is busy. It’s extremely helpful for some of the narrative’s tighter chase missions and getaways, but really, it’s helpful whenever you want to do a little precision driving.
Michael has the exact same basic capability as Franklin, except for him time slows down if he’s on foot. When his special is busy, Michael is essentially only channeling Max Payne’s bullet-time attribute. He is more deadly because he’s moving faster than anyone else on earth. Trevor also becomes more fatal when his special is busy, but not due to bullet-time. Instead, Trevor goes into a rage mode that makes his weapons do more damage while reducing the damage he takes.
Each special ability serves a function in various situations. Franklin is clearly the wheel guy. Michael is best employed as a sniper, because his bullet-time capability makes scoring headshots at extreme ranges no difficulty in any way. Trevor is best saved for all round assaults, those moments when you really just want some nutjob using a shotgun to operate in and clear out a space. Each character’s special meter — visible as a yellow bar in the bottom left corner of the display, below the minimap — refills automatically with time.
Materials you need to try
Now that you’ve got the basics down, here are a couple of specific things that you might want to test out, or at least keep in mind. Got some of your own? Or some other hints that weren’t mentioned here?
Mind your airspace: Here’s a professional tip that should help everyone. Most of us are probably going to want to jump in that blimp straight away and fly around. That’s fine. It’s a slow-moving monster, but it is a neat way to tour around the map. Keep one thing in mind though: limited airspace is not your buddy. Be cautious to not fly the blimp over the airport or the prison or the military base. It’s a crap escape vehicle, being that it is a giant freaking balloon drifting in the skies.
The most reliable way to sneak a jet that we’ve found: fill up Trevor’s special meter, get a helicopter, and fly high, high over Fort Zancudo (if you’re large enough, then you won’t activate the alerts ). Once that’s done, skydive down into the base. You are aiming for the large open hangar that’s adjacent to the runway. There’s obviously a jet inside. Activate Trevor’s special after you hit the floor and make a beeline for the jet. Then get the hell out of there. You have got sufficient acceleration that you ought to be able to remove the moment you clear the hangar.
Channel your inner Jacques Cousteau: There’s a significant chunk of property in Grand Theft Auto 5 in the bottom of the ocean. Find all of the items: The story in Grand Theft Auto 5 visits several places in Los Santos, but many others are skipped over. You won’t visit the prison or the military base. You won’t see any concerts in the town’s Hollywood Bowl knock-off, and you won’t bury any bodies under the Vinewood sign. Ensure you get out there and really research. There’s a lot of little tidbits hidden off. Can you locate the abandoned hippie commune? The mountain fort from the Altruist Cult? Recall: GTA Online is coming on October 1, and in that point the map becomes a giant playground for you and your friends.
Of course there are secrets. GTA games always have them. You are under no obligation to use them, and we will not judge you in the event that you do.
